14:9a But Jehoash king of Israel replied to Amaziah king of Judah:

Then King Jehoash of Israel answered King Amaziah of Judah. He said,

-or-

But Israel’s king Jehoash replied to Judah’s king, Amaziah, ⌊with the following story/riddle⌋ . He said,

14:9b “A thistle in Lebanon sent a message to a cedar in Lebanon,

“⌊This is like⌋ a thorn plant/shrub asking a cedar tree of Lebanon

-or-

“⌊Once upon a time⌋ a ⌊little⌋ thistle sent/made a request to a ⌊great⌋ cedar of Lebanon.

14:9c saying, ‘Give your daughter to my son in marriage.’

to give its/his daughter in marriage to the son of the thorn plant/shrub!

-or-

The thistle asked to have/receive the cedar’s daughter as a wife/bride for his own son.

14:9d Then a wild beast in Lebanon came along

But then a wild animal from Lebanon showed up,

-or-

Then a bush/forest animal passed/stopped by

14:9e and trampled the thistle.

and trampled down the thistle scrub.

-or-

and walked all over that thornbush!
