SIL Translator’s Notes on 2 Kings 14:13

14:13a There at Beth-shemesh, Jehoash king of Israel captured Amaziah king of Judah, the son of Joash, the son of Ahaziah.

At Beth Shemesh Jehoash king of Israel seized/captured Judah’s king Amaziah son of Joash and grandson of Ahaziah.

There at Beth Shemesh King Jehoash of Israel took the king of Judah captive. He made Amaziah son of Joash, grandson of Ahaziah, a prisoner of war.

14:13b Then Jehoash went to Jerusalem

Then Jehoash marched ⌊with his men⌋ to ⌊the city of⌋ Jerusalem.

After ⌊their victory,⌋ Jehoash ⌊and his soldiers⌋ went/came to Jerusalem

14:13c and broke down the wall of Jerusalem

They broke/pulled down the wall ⌊surrounding⌋ ⌊the city⌋ of Jerusalem.

-or-

and destroyed/damaged its great wall.

14:13d from the Ephraim Gate to the Corner Gate—

They destroyed this wall⌋ all the way from the Gate of Ephraim up to the Corner Gate,

They broke/took down the wall from ⌊the gate called⌋ “Ephraim’s Gate” to ⌊the gate called⌋ “the Corner Gate.”

14:13e a section of four hundred cubits.

A cubit was an ancient unit of measurement. It was the distance from a man’s elbow to fingertip, about eighteen inches. See 1 Kings 6:2.

which is a distance of nearly two hundred meters.

The length ⌊of this portion of the wall⌋ was about six hundred feet.
