SIL Translator’s Notes on 2 Kings 13:17

13:17a “Open the east window,” said Elisha. So he opened it

There may have been wooden shutters or a fabric curtain over the window. Glass was not used at this time.

Elisha said, “Open (sing.) the window that faces east.” The king opened the window.

-or-

Then Elisha said ⌊to Jehoash⌋ , “Have/Order the window opened, the window that faces the sunrise, ⌊toward Aram/Syria⌋ .” The king did that.

13:17b and Elisha said, “Shoot!” So he shot.

Then Elisha said, “Shoot!” And the king shot an arrow ⌊out/through the window⌋ .

-or-

Elisha said, “Loose/Send ⌊the arrow⌋ !” And the king let it fly ⌊toward Aram/Syria⌋ .

13:17c And Elisha declared: “This is the LORD’s arrow of victory,

Then Elisha said,⌋ “This arrow ⌊is/shows⌋ Yahweh’s victory!

-or-

Elisha exclaimed,⌋ “⌊That is⌋ Yahweh’s conquering/delivering arrow!

13:17d the arrow of victory over Aram,

This arrow will save ⌊Israel⌋ from ⌊the king/nation of⌋ Aram.

-or-

With this arrow ⌊you (sing.) ⌋ will deliver ⌊Israel⌋ from the Arameans/Syrians!

13:17e for you shall strike the Arameans in Aphek until you have put an end to them.”

There were several different towns called Aphek. This is probably the one mentioned in 1 Kings 20:26, 30. It was east of the sea of Galilee.

You (sing.) will totally defeat the Arameans ⌊at the town⌋ called Aphek.”

-or-

At Aphek ⌊town⌋ you (sing.) will destroy the entire Aramean/Syrian ⌊army⌋ !”
