SIL Translator’s Notes on 2 Kings 11:4

11:4a Then in the seventh year, Jehoiada sent for the commanders of hundreds, the Carites, and the guards,

Seven years later, Jehoiada called for the army captains, the Carite soldiers, and the guards

In the seventh year ⌊of Athaliah’s reign⌋ , Jehoiada the priest sent a message to the junior/lesser army officers, the royal bodyguards, and the palace guards.

11:4b and had them brought into the house of the LORD.

to meet him in the temple of Yahweh.

He told them to come and join him in Yahweh’s house.

11:4c There he made a covenant with them

He made an solemn agreement with them

-or-

When they arrived,⌋ he made a pact/alliance with them.

11:4d and put them under oath.

and required them to swear an oath in the temple of Yahweh.

-or-

As they stood⌋ in Yahweh’s house, he had them swear ⌊to be faithful/true⌋ .

11:4e He showed them the king’s son

Then he showed them the son of King ⌊Ahaziah, that is, Joash⌋ .

Then he allowed them to see ⌊Joash,⌋ the son of the king!
