32:6a Hezekiah appointed military commanders over the people

Hezekiah put commanders in charge of the people
-or-
King Hezekiah put his soldiers under the command of military chiefs.

32:6b and gathered the people in the square of the city gate.

and had the people stand in front of him in the courtyard by the city gate.

He gathered them in the open space near the entrance to the city

32:6c Then he encouraged them, saying

Then he strengthened them with these words:
