12:1a After Rehoboam had established his sovereignty and royal power,

After Rehoboam had taken control of his kingdom and become a strong king,
-or-
Rehoboam was firmly established as the king ⌊of Judah⌋ and he became powerful.

12:1b he and all Israel with him forsook the Law of the LORD.

he and all the people of ⌊the southern part of⌋ Israel rejected the law of Yahweh.
-or-
But after that, he and all his people stopped obeying the law of Yahweh.
