SIL Translator’s Notes on 1 Kings 8:16

8:16a ‘Since the day I brought My people Israel out of Egypt,

This is what Yahweh/he said: ‘Long ago, I caused my people Israel to leave Egypt.
-or-
For Yahweh said, ‘From the day I led my people Israel out of Egypt

8:16b I have not chosen a city from any tribe of Israel in which to build a house

Since then, I have not chosen any city in which a temple should be built. I did not choose one city among the Israelite tribes
-or-
I chose no city in any tribe of Israel. I did not ask/tell men to build me a temple in any city

8:16c so that My Name would be there.

for my name to be present/⌊honored⌋ there.
-or-
where ⌊my people could worship⌋ me.

8:16d But I have chosen David to be over My people Israel.’

But I did choose David to rule my people, the people of Israel.’
-or-
But I made the choice of David to be the king of Israel my people!’

8:16a-d

Yahweh reminded David that ever since he/Yahweh had brought his people Israel out of Egypt he had not asked for a temple. He/Yahweh had not chosen any city in Israel where this temple should be built. But he did choose/select David to be king over his people Israel.
