3:4a Now the king went to Gibeon to sacrifice there,
The king ⌊often/regularly⌋ went up to ⌊the place/town of⌋ Gibeon to offer/make sacrifices.

King Solomon used to go to ⌊the hill/shrine at⌋ Gibeon. He sacrificed ⌊animals⌋ there ⌊to honor God⌋,

Solomon ⌊often⌋ gave/presented sacrifices to God ⌊on the altar⌋ at Gibeon.
3:4b for it was the great high place.
⌊He went there⌋ because that was the chief hilltop/local shrine.

because that was the most famous/prominent of the local places of worship.

The shrine there was the most important ⌊in all Israel⌋.
3:4c Solomon offered a thousand burnt offerings on the altar there.
On the altar there he sacrificed a thousand offerings.
