2:28a When the news reached Joab,

Joab received/heard the news ⌊of what had happened to the king’s enemies⌋.
-or-
Someone/They told Joab that ⌊Solomon had punished Adonijah and Abiathar⌋.

2:28b who had conspired with Adonijah but not with Absalom,

He/Joab had not supported Absalom, but he had supported Adonijah.
-or-
Even though Joab had not followed Absalom ⌊against the king⌋, he had followed Adonijah.

2:28c he fled to the tent of the LORD and took hold of the horns of the altar.

So he ran to Yahweh’s tent and took hold of the horns/corners of the altar.
-or-
So he hurried to Yahweh’s tent ⌊for safety⌋. There he held/grasped onto the corners of the platform/place of sacrifice.

2:28a-c (reordered)

Joab had not joined Absalom ⌊when he rebelled against David⌋, but he had joined Adonijah. So when he/Joab heard ⌊that Adonijah had been killed⌋, he ran ⌊for safety/refuge⌋ to the tent of Yahweh. There he held/grasped the horns ⌊at the corners⌋ of the altar.
