20:11a And the king of Israel replied, “Tell him:

The king of Israel replied, “Tell Ben-Hadad this.

But Ahab sent this message in reply:

But Ahab told ⌊the messengers⌋ to give this reply to Ben-Hadad:

20:11b ‘The one putting on his armor should not boast like one taking it off.’”

‘The man who is putting on his armor ⌊to prepare for battle⌋ should not boast. It is the man who is taking off his armor ⌊after winning a victory⌋ who can boast.’”

“A man who has won a victory can boast. A man who is just getting ready to fight should not boast!”
-or-
“Do (sing) not boast that you have won the battle before you have even started to fight!”
