12:8a But Rehoboam rejected the advice of the elders;

But Rehoboam did not accept the counsel that the old men gave him.

12:8b instead, he consulted the young men who had grown up with him and served him.

He asked the opinion/advice of the young men who had grown up with him and were now serving him ⌊as his advisers⌋.

⌊Instead⌋ he went to get advice from the young men of his own age who were his ⌊own⌋ counselors.
