SIL Translator’s Notes on 1 Kings 12:28

12:28a After seeking advice,

So King ⌊Jeroboam⌋ asked ⌊his men⌋ for advice.
-or-
So he asked ⌊his advisers⌋ ⌊what he should do⌋.

12:28b the king made two golden calves

Then he made two ⌊male⌋ calves out of gold.
-or-

They advised/recommended that⌋ he have ⌊his servants/craftsmen⌋ make gold ⌊statues/images of⌋ two ⌊bull⌋ calves. So Jeroboam did this.

12:28c and said to the people, “Going up to Jerusalem is too much for you.

He said to the people ⌊of Israel⌋, “It is too ⌊difficult/far⌋ for you (plur) to go to Jerusalem to worship.

Then he said to ⌊his⌋ people, “Do not cause yourselves trouble/work by going to ⌊the temple in⌋ Jerusalem. ⌊Stay/Worship here.

12:28d Here, O Israel, are your gods, who brought you up out of the land of Egypt.”

Look at your gods, Israelites ! These are the gods who brought you out of Egypt.”
-or-
People of Israel, ⌊these calves⌋ are your gods who helped ⌊your ancestors⌋ come out of Egypt.”
