SIL Translator’s Notes on 1 Chronicles 19:2

19:2a And David said, “I will show kindness to Hanun son of Nahash,

David said, “I will be kind to Hanun son of Nahash,
-or-
David ⌊heard about the death of king Nahash⌋ . ⌊So he thought⌋ he would show kindness to Hanun son of ⌊king⌋ Nahash.

19:2b because his father showed kindness to me.”

just as Nahash⌋ his father, was kind to me.”
-or-

He promised to do this⌋ because ⌊king Nahash, Hanun’s⌋ father, showed ⌊him/David⌋ kindness.

19:2a–b (reordered)

David thought, “⌊king⌋ Nahash showed kindness to me. ⌊Therefore⌋ I will ⌊also⌋ show kindness to his son Hanun.”

Nahash, Hanun’s⌋ father, showed kindness to ⌊David⌋ . ⌊So, when king David heard that king Nahash died⌋ , he decided to show kindness to his son, Hanun.

19:2c So David sent messengers to console Hanun concerning his father.

So David sent messengers to Hanun, to tell him that he was sorry that his father ⌊had died⌋ .

Therefore, David sent ⌊a group of his⌋ representatives to Hanun. He said “Go(plur) to Hanun and tell him I’m sorry his father died.”

19:2d But when David’s servants arrived in the land of the Ammonites

David’s messengers went to Hanun in the land of the Ammonites.

Then the⌋ representatives of David came to Hanun in the land of the Ammon ⌊people⌋ .

19:2e to console him,

They came⌋ to tell him ⌊that David⌋ was sorry ⌊that his father had died⌋ .

They came⌋ to comfort him ⌊for the death of his father⌋ .
