19:10a When Joab saw the battle lines before him and behind him,

Joab realized that he ⌊would have to fight both⌋ in front of himself and behind himself ⌊at the same time⌋ .

19:10b he selected some of the best men of Israel

So he picked the best Israelite soldiers
