Section 1:1–15

God will punish the countries surrounding Israel

1:1a These are the words of Amos, who was among the sheepherders of Tekoa—

These are the words of Amos, who was one of the sheep breeder/owners. He was ⌊from the village⌋ of Tekoa.

⌊There was a prophet Amos in the land of Israel⌋ . He was one of the sheep breeder/owners ⌊from the village⌋ of Tekoa. The following are his prophecies/sayings.

1:1b what he saw concerning Israel two years before the earthquake,

He prophesies/speaks about the visions he saw concerning Israel two years before the earthquake ⌊happened in Israel⌋ .

He received visions ⌊from God⌋ about the people of Israel two years before the great disaster struck the land of Israel.

1:1c in the days when Uzziah was king of Judah and Jeroboam son of Jehoash was king of Israel.

That was the time Uzziah ruled Judah as king and Jeroboam son of Jehoash ruled Israel as its king.

⌊Amos spoke during the time⌋ when king Uzziah reigned in Judah and king Jeroboam, who was the son of Jehoash, reigned in Israel.
