SIL Translator’s Notes on Ezra 5:5

5:5a But the eye of their God was on the elders of the Jews,

But the eyes of their God were upon the Jewish elders.

Due/Thanks to the help/favor/care of the God ⌊of Israel⌋ towards the heads/leaders of families of Israel,

5:5b so that they were not stopped until a report was sent to Darius

So no one caused them to stop ⌊working⌋ until ⌊the governor’s⌋ report reached Darius,

the Persian officials⌋ did not stop them ⌊from building God’s house⌋. First, the officials wrote/reported to ⌊King⌋ Darius

5:5c and written instructions about this matter were returned.

and he and his officials returned/sent a response.

and waited for him to send back a letter with/about his decision.

5:5a-c (reordered)

The Persian officials⌋ did not make them stop ⌊rebuilding the temple⌋ because the God ⌊of Israel⌋ was watching over the leaders of the Jews. ⌊Those officials⌋ waited until they had sent a report to ⌊King⌋ Darius ⌊to ask him what to do⌋. Then they waited for his answer.
