16:2a When the Gazites heard that Samson was there,

The people who lived in Gaza found out he was there
-or-
Someone told the people of Gaza, “Samson has come here.”

16:2b they surrounded that place

so they gathered around the city.
-or-
⌊They wanted to kill him,⌋ so they formed a circle around the city.

16:2c and lay in wait for him all night at the city gate.

They spent the night at the town gate waiting for him.
-or-
They hid near the city gate and waited all night for him ⌊to come out⌋ .

16:2d They were quiet throughout the night,

They kept quiet all night,
-or-
They did not try to capture him that night

16:2e saying, “Let us wait until dawn; then we will kill him.”

saying, “We will kill him when it gets light.”
-or-
but said to each other, “When morning comes we will kill him.”
