17:12a They served idols,

They worshiped idols,

The people of Israel worshiped/served false gods.

17:12b although the LORD had told them,

even though Yahweh had said to them,

They disobeyed Yahweh’s command

17:12c “You shall not do this thing.”

“You must not worship idols.”

to abandon/avoid ⌊all⌋ false gods.
