SIL Translator’s Notes on 2 Kings 14:1

Section 14:1-22

King Amaziah ruled Judah

14:1a In the second year of the reign of Jehoash son of Jehoahaz over Israel,

In the Hebrew text the name Jehoash is here spelled “Joash.” Elsewhere this king of Israel is referred to as Jehoash (2 Kings 13:10b). Since one of the kings of Judah was named Joash (see 14:1b and throughout 2 Kings 12), it is best to use a different spelling for the king of Israel. See the note on 2 Kings 13:9c.

It was the second year of ⌊the reign of⌋ Jehoash, the son of King Jehoahaz of Israel.

-or-

King Jehoahaz’s son, Jehoash, had ruled Israel for about two years.

14:1b Amaziah son of Joash became king of Judah.

During this time⌋ Amaziah son of King Joash became king of Judah.

-or-

It was then that Amaziah, the son of Judah’s king Joash, began to rule Judah.
