SIL Translator’s Notes on 2 Kings 9:22

9:22a When Joram saw Jehu, he asked,

As soon as Joram saw Jehu, he asked him,

-or-

When he saw/met Jehu, Joram asked him,

-or-

Joram saw/met Jehu and immediately asked him

9:22b “Have you come in peace, Jehu?”

“Jehu, is there peace ⌊between us (incl.) ⌋ ?

-or-

“Jehu, are you (sing.) coming as a friend or an enemy?”

-or-

if he was coming in peace.

9:22c “How can there be peace,” he replied,

Jehu replied, “How can ⌊we (incl.) ⌋ have/enjoy peace?

-or-

Jehu answered, “You know very well that we cannot be friends,

-or-

Jehu answered that there could be no peace

9:22d “as long as the idolatry and witchcraft of your mother Jezebel abound?”

All over ⌊the land⌋ ⌊people⌋ are worshiping idols and practicing sorcery like your mother Jezebel did! ⌊There will be no peace until this stops!⌋ ”

-or-

because your mother Jezebel ⌊made people⌋ worship idols and practice witchcraft throughout the country.”

-or-

while ⌊the people of Israel⌋ were worshiping idols and practicing sorcery. He said that Jezebel the mother of Joram ⌊had caused all this evil⌋ .
