SIL Translator’s Notes on 1 Kings 9:8

9:8a And when this temple has become a heap of rubble,

This house/temple will become a heap of ruins/stones.
-or-
The house/temple of Yahweh will be nothing but a rubbish pile.

9:8b all who pass by it will be appalled and will hiss and say,

All ⌊the people⌋ who walk/go by will be shocked and will hiss/whistle and say/ask,
-or-
Passersby will look at it in shock and scorn. They will say to one another,
-or-
Everyone who sees it will be astonished. They will look on it with scorn and ask

9:8c ‘Why has the LORD done such a thing to this land and to this temple?’

‘Why did Yahweh do this ⌊terrible⌋ thing to this land and to ⌊his⌋ house?’
-or-
‘Why did Yahweh allow this to happen to this land? Why did he allow ⌊people/enemies to destroy⌋ this temple?’
-or-
what caused Yahweh to treat/⌊punish⌋ this land and his temple ⌊so badly/harshly⌋.
