5:1a Now when Hiram king of Tyre heard that Solomon had been anointed king in his father’s place,
Hiram, the king of Tyre, heard/learned that ⌊the people of Israel⌋ had anointed Solomon as their king in place of his father David.

At this time Hiram was the ruler of Tyre ⌊city⌋. ⌊His men⌋ told him, “David ⌊the king of Israel⌋ has died and his son Solomon has been appointed/chosen to rule.”
5:1b he sent envoys to Solomon;
So Hiram sent ⌊some of⌋ his men/servants to Solomon,

So Hiram sent his official representatives to ⌊speak/meet with⌋ Solomon.
5:1c for Hiram had always been a friend of David.
because he had always been David’s ally/friend.

He wanted to have the same good relationship ⌊with Solomon⌋ that he had always had with David.
