Translation commentary on Luke 14:3

Exegesis:

apokritheis ‘answering’ cf. on 1.60.

pros tous nomikous kai Pharisaious ‘to the experts in the law and the Pharisees,’ cf. on 7.30.

exestin tō sabbatō therapeusai ē ou ‘is it permitted to heal on the sabbath or not?’ For exestin cf. on 6.2, for therapeuō cf. on 4.23. The article with sabattō is generic.

Translation:

Spoke to, cf. the note on “answered” in 3.16.

For lawyers see 7.30; for is it lawful see 6.2.

Or not, or filling out the ellipsis, ‘or is it not allowed/fitting’ (Batak Toba, Sranan Tongo), ‘or is it forbidden.’
