Translation commentary on Tobit 13:15

A grammatical ambiguity in the Greek makes it possible for this verse to be translated My soul blesses the Lord, the great King or “O my soul, bless the Lord, the great King.” Good News Translation and Contemporary English Version accept the first alternative, but use the pronoun “I” to represent My soul. But in the light of Psa 103.1-2, it is probably better to render “O my soul, praise the Lord, the great king.” However, in many languages it will sound strange to talk to your soul or your inner self. In such cases translators may follow Good News Translation and Contemporary English Version.
