Translation commentary on Tobit 14:6

The nations in the whole world will all be converted and worship God in truth: “Come back” (Good News Translation) gives a false impression; it suggests that these nations once worshiped God and then ceased to do so. The idea is that they will turn to God from idols, and for the first time be converted (compare Acts 9.35). Worship God in truth is taken by Good News Translation to mean “worship him as the only true God,” and by others to mean “the true worship of God” (New English Bible). Against the ancient background, the concern is probably where Good News Translation places it rather than with proper worship procedures. To show this more clearly, translators may reorder the clauses of this verse as follows:

• All the nations on earth will stop worshiping their idols, which have only deceived them and led them away from the truth. They will then turn to God and worship only him.
