Translation commentary on 2 Chronicles 14:12

The common Hebrew conjunction at the beginning of this verse is translated So by Revised Standard Version, New Revised Standard Version and New Jewish Publication Society’s Tanakh. But Good News Translation and several other English versions leave it untranslated and simply begin a new paragraph.

The LORD defeated the Ethiopians before Asa and before Judah, and the Ethiopians fled: For Ethiopians see 2Chr 14.9. The second mention of the Ethiopians in this verse may be better translated as a pronoun in some languages (so Good News Translation). Before Asa and before Judah implies that King Asa was the leader of the Judean army. It may be better to make this explicit by saying “Asa and his Judean army” or “the army of Judah led by Asa.” New Century Version speaks of “Asa’s army from Judah.”
