Translation commentary on 2 Chronicles 9:9

Then renders the common Hebrew conjunction. Here it introduces the next event in the story. Good News Translation expresses it by beginning a new paragraph.

She gave the king: In languages that do not distinguish masculine and feminine pronouns, the names of the participants here may have to be given instead of using only the pronoun she and the title king. It should be clear that it is the queen of Sheba who gives gifts to King Solomon. The text speaks of what Solomon gave to the queen in return in verse 12.

A hundred and twenty talents of gold: For talents see the comments on 1 Chr 19.6. The equivalent of a hundred and twenty talents is “almost five tons” (Good News Translation, Contemporary English Version) or “about nine thousand pounds” (New Century Version; similarly New Living Translation, God’s Word). In terms of the metric system this would be a little “more than 4,000 kilogrammes” (GNT British edition).

Regarding spices and precious stones, see the comments on 2Chr 9.1.

There were no spices such as those which the queen of Sheba gave to King Solomon: Revised Standard Version‘s literal translation here may confuse readers. If the queen gave such spices to Solomon, how can it be said that there were no spices such as those? The sense is more clearly expressed in Good News Translation, which has “There have never been any other spices as fine as those that the queen of Sheba gave to King Solomon.” God’s Word says “Never was there such a large quantity of spices in Israel as those that the queen of Sheba gave King Solomon.” We prefer the sense given in Good News Translation. The writer speaks of the quantity of spices earlier in this verse, but here he almost certainly has in mind their quality.
