They wanted to retire: It is not clear from the Greek who wanted to retire, but it seems to be the parents. New American Bible makes this clear. Good News Translation avoids the problem by shifting the focus from wanting to go to bed to “it was time to go to bed.” This is a good solution, since it makes no difference who wants to go to bed. If it is necessary to decide, it should be the parents. Contemporary English Version interprets wanted as “decided” and has “they decided it was time to go to bed.”
Took … and brought means simply “led” (Good News Translation).
