Now then, tell me: Under what tree did you catch them being intimate with each other?: Compare verse 54. Good News Translation neglects to mention that the couple were intimate. It could easily be inserted: “Now tell me, when Susanna and this young man were making love, what tree were they under?” (Contemporary English Version). This would conform with the suggested wording in verse 54 and reflect the Greek at this point a bit better.

Evergreen oak: See the important comments on verse 54 regarding the play on words here and in verse 59. The tree in view here is probably the holm oak (Quercus ilex). It is an evergreen, rather like the live oak of the southern United States. In any case, it was a “large oak tree” (Good News Translation).
