Translation commentary on Sirach 44:8

There are some of them who have left a name: This verse contrasts with verse 9. It tells us that some of the men mentioned above are still remembered. Verse 9 will tell us that others are forgotten, even though, as verse 7 says, they were well known during their lifetimes. Here a name refers to “a reputation” (Good News Translation); leaving a name means that you are remembered after your death. So for this line Good News Translation has “Some of them left a reputation.”

So that men declare their praise: The important thing here is to make it clear that “people still praise them” at the present day, so this line may be rendered “and even today people praise them.”
