Translation commentary on Sirach 37:26

He who is wise among his people will inherit confidence, and his name will live for ever: There is a textual problem here, as the Revised Standard Version footnote indicates. Some manuscripts read “honor” rather than confidence. We prefer “honor” as more consistent with the context and with the Hebrew. A suggested approach for verses 25-26 is:

• The Jewish people will continue to exist long after each of us has reached the end of our days [or, died]. But people will forever honor and remember those who are wise among us.
