Good News Translation‘s paragraph break here is unnecessary.
Do not consult with one who looks at you suspiciously: One who looks at you suspiciously is a good literal translation of the Greek verb used here. Good News Translation “anyone who doesn’t trust you” is also a good equivalent, though it does not provide as good a mental image.
Hide your counsel from those who are jealous of you: Good News Translation does not understand this properly. New Revised Standard Version has it right with “hide your intentions from those who are jealous of you.”
An alternative model for this verse is:
• Don’t ask advice from anyone who doesn’t trust you, and don’t let anyone who is jealous of you know your plans.
Contemporary English Version combines the two lines, but the result is the same:
• If someone is jealous
or suspicious of you,
don’t ask them for advice
or tell them your plans.
