Translation commentary on Sirach 14:26 - 14:27

Good News Translation combines these verses and reads the Hebrew. We suggest following the Greek, as does Revised Standard Version.

He will place his children under her shelter, and will camp under her boughs: The imagery changes here from Wisdom’s house to Wisdom as a tree. This recalls Psa 1.3. Alternative models are “Their children are safe there, under Wisdom’s protecting branches” and “Like a shade tree, Wisdom protects the children of her followers.” But for those translators who cannot personify Wisdom, here is a possible model for verse 26:

• Wisdom is also like a shade tree that protects the children of those who become wise [or, learn wisdom].

He will be sheltered by her from the heat: Here we must make sure that the reader will understand the pronoun he refers to those who are searching for Wisdom, and not to the children mentioned in verse 26. Sheltered by her from the heat is not to be taken literally. It is a figure of speech that would be understood by most people living, like the author, in warm climates. We can abandon the figure by saying “Those concerned with Wisdom will find shelter during hard times” or “Those who truly try to become wise….”

And will dwell in the midst of her glory may be rendered “living in her glorious presence” or “and their wisdom will give them great fame [or, glory].”
