Translation commentary on Numbers 21:35

So they slew him, and his sons, and all his people, until there was not one survivor left to him: The pronoun they refers to the Israelites, which Good News Bible makes clear. Slew is literally “struck/attacked” (see the comments on 3.13). Here it may be rendered “killed” (Good News Bible). NCV provides a helpful model for this sentence, saying “So the Israelites killed Og and his sons and all his army; no one was left alive.”

And they possessed his land: The Hebrew verb for possessed (yarash) is the same one rendered “took possession of” in verse 24. It refers to “taking rightful possession” of a piece of land or some other property. The same verb occurs in passages in which the LORD promises to give the land of Canaan to the people of Israel (see, for example, Gen 28.4; Lev 20.24).
