Translation commentary on John 6:8

Some languages have distinct terms for older and younger brothers. For the problem of whether Andrew was older or younger than Simon Peter see 1.40,44.

Said is literally “said to him,” but Good News Translation understands “to him” to be implicit in the English text. In some languages it may be useful to indicate clearly the one to whom Andrew spoke, that is, “said to Jesus.”

SIL Translator’s Notes on John 6:8

6:8

One of His disciples, Andrew, Simon Peter’s brother, said to Him: Andrew spoke to Jesus. See 1:40, where the disciple Andrew is first mentioned. Because Philip, mentioned in 6:5b and 6:7a, was also a disciple, it may be natural to say:

Another one of his disciples, Andrew, who was Simon Peter’s brother, said (Good News Translation)

brother: The New Testament never states explicitly whether Andrew or Simon Peter was the older brother. See the note on 1:40a–b.
