Then his disciples said to him is more literally “his disciples are saying” (Revised Standard Version “His disciples said”). Good News Translation includes the particle then to indicate the transition. To emphasize the disciples’ words, New American Bible reorders the elements somewhat: “ ‘At last you are talking plainly,’ his disciples exclaimed, ‘without talking in veiled language!’ ”
Now is emphatic in the Greek sentence structure; New American Bible renders by “at last.”
Plainly and figures of speech translate the same words used in verse 25. Without using figures of speech may be rendered “you are not using words which show comparisons” or “you are not using similarities.”
