Translation commentary on Genesis 45:9

In verses 9-13 Joseph urges his brothers to bring Jacob, the people of his household, and his herds to Egypt, where they will be cared for during the remaining years of the famine. Again Joseph addresses all the brothers.

Make haste and go up to my father: that is, “Hurry and go back to [our] father.” For go up see 13.1.

Thus says your son Joseph: that is, “tell him that this is what his son Joseph says,” “tell him that these are the words spoken by his son Joseph,” or “tell him I am his son Joseph and I say these words to him.”

LORD of all Egypt: that is, “ruler of all the people of Egypt” or “ruler of the whole country of Egypt.”

Come down to me: see 43.20.

Do not tarry: that is, “without delay,” “immediately.”
