Translation commentary on Ezekiel 13:8

The description of the actions of the false prophets comes to a climax here as God says he will punish them.

Therefore thus says the Lord GOD: See Ezek 13.3.

Because you have uttered delusions and seen lies: See the comments on verses 6-7. The pronoun you refers to the false prophets.

Therefore behold, I am against you: The Hebrew word hinneh rendered Behold draws attention to what God is about to say. Many languages do not find this word natural and omit it, but others use an expression such as “look.” The tense of the Hebrew expression rendered I am against you is not specific. Translators may use present or future tense according to the needs of their own language. Contemporary English Version says “I am going to punish those lying prophets.” The use of the connectors because and therefore draws attention to the close connection between the sins of the prophets and their punishment. Another way to express the relationship is to render this whole sentence as “The words you have spoken are false and your visions are lies. So look, that is why I am against you.”

Says the Lord GOD: This traditional prophetic formula is used at the end of this verse to stress the importance of God’s statement here. It may be rendered “I, the Lord Yahweh, have said it.”
