For this verse compare Job38.7; Psa147.4; Isa 40.26.
The stars shone in their watches; that is, in their assigned places. Compare the idea in Sir 43.10.
The words spoken by the stars, Here we are (compare Job 38.35), are adequately represented by Good News Translation “they promptly answered.”
Again Good News Translation restructures here to create a more easily followed sequence:
he called them — He called the stars
and they said, “Here we are!” — they promptly answered
the stars shone in their watches — they took their places
and were glad … They shone with gladness — and gladly shone
for him who made them — to please the one who made them
Contemporary English Version also has a helpful restructuring:
• Even the stars obeyed his voice, and they are happy to shine wherever and whenever he commands.
