These were heated immediately: Good News Bible joins this clause with the preceding sentence, which works well. Another possible model that does this is:

• 3 This made the king furious, and he ordered his men to heat some huge pans and kettles until they were red hot, 4 and they did so.

And he commanded that the tongue of their spokesman be cut out: Their spokesman refers to the young man who spoke up in verse 2. This clause may be rendered in the active voice by saying “Then the king ordered his men to cut out the tongue of the brother who had spoken.”

And that they scalp him and cut off his hands and feet, while the rest of the brothers and the mother looked on: Scalp means to cut off the skin on the head of a living person. Scalp him may be rendered “cut the hair and skin off the top of his head.”

Here is an alternative model for this verse:

• … and they did so. Then the king ordered them to take the young man who had just spoken, and cut his tongue out, cut the hair and skin from his head, and cut off his hands and feet. He wanted the man’s mother and his brothers to see this [being done].
