Translation commentary on 2 Maccabees 7:13

Another paragraph break may be inserted here (so Revised Standard Version, Good News Bible).

When he too had died, they maltreated and tortured the fourth in the same way: When he too had died may be rendered “After he died.” The synonymous words maltreated and tortured are used for emphasis. Good News Bible combines them, saying simply “tortured.” Goldstein keeps the emphasis by rendering they maltreated and tortured the fourth in the same way as “they tormented the fourth with similar tortures.” An alternative model for this verse is:

• When [or, After] he died, the soldiers took the fourth brother and tortured him in the same cruel way.
