Translation commentary on 2 Maccabees 14:2

And had taken possession of the country, having made away with Antiochus and his guardian Lysias: See 1Macc 7.34. It may be helpful to begin this verse with “It was reported that he…” (Good News Bible) or “They also learned [or, found out] that he….” Made away with means “killed.” An alternative model for this verse is:

• They also learned that Demetrius had killed both King Antiochus and his guardian Lysias and had taken over the country.
