Translation commentary on 2 Maccabees 12:19

Dositheus and Sosipater, who were captains under Maccabeus: Captains may be translated “generals.” Either rendering is acceptable.

Marched out: The two generals and their soldiers didn’t “march out” of anywhere. This clause is better rendered “led their soldiers to attack the fort.”

And destroyed those whom Timothy had left in the stronghold, more than ten thousand men: The stronghold is the “garrison” of verse 18. For stronghold see the comments on 1Macc 1.2.

Good News Bible provides a good model for this verse, but “all 10,000 men” should be rendered “all the more than 10,000 men.”
