Translation commentary on 2 Maccabees 10:32

Both Revised Standard Version and Good News Bible have a paragraph break here, which we recommend.

Timothy himself fled to a stronghold called Gazara, especially well garrisoned: For stronghold see verse 15. For the fortified town of Gazara (Good News Bible “Gezer”), see the comments on 1Macc 4.12-15. According to 1Macc 13.43-48, it is captured by Judas’ brother Simon. Especially well garrisoned means that there was a large group of enemy soldiers there.

Where Chaereas was commander: In verse 37 we learn that Chaereas was Timothy’s brother. It is appropriate to move this information forward into this verse, as Good News Bible and Contemporary English Version have done.

Either Good News Bible or Contemporary English Version may be used as a model for this verse. Contemporary English Version has “Timothy himself escaped to the fortress at Gazara, where his brother Chaereas commanded a large force.”
