SIL Translator’s Notes on 2 Kings 1:17

1:17a So Ahaziah died according to the word of the LORD

So he died, as Yahweh had said he would

-or-

So King ⌊Ahaziah⌋ died, just as Yahweh had said he would die,

1:17b that Elijah had spoken.

and as Elijah had announced/declared.

-or-

giving this message/word ⌊to Ahaziah⌋ through Elijah.

1:17a-b (combined)

So Ahaziah died, just as Yahweh, through Elijah, had said he would.

1:17c And since he had no son,

Because ⌊King⌋ Ahaziah had no son,

-or-

King Ahaziah had no son,

1:17d Jehoram succeeded him

The Hebrew text has “Jehoram” here and in 1:17e. This is an alternative spelling of the name Joram. It is good to distinguish between the king of Israel and the king of Judah by spelling the name of the king of Israel as Joram and the name of the king of Judah as Jehoram.

Joram became king in Ahaziah’s place

-or-

so when he died ⌊his brother⌋ Joram became the ⌊next/new⌋ king.

1:17e in the second year of the reign of Jehoram

in the second year of Jehoram’s ⌊rule⌋ over Judah.

-or-

This happened during the second year ⌊when⌋ Jehoram

1:17f son of Jehoshaphat over Judah.

This Jehoram was the son of Jehoshaphat king of Judah.

-or-

the son of Jehoshaphat was ruling over Judah as king.

1:17c-f (combined)

Because ⌊King⌋ Ahaziah did not have a son, ⌊his younger brother⌋ Joram became king ⌊of Israel⌋ in his place. ⌊This/it happened⌋ during the second year when King Jehoram, the son of King Jehoshaphat, was ruling over Judah.
