Translation commentary on 2 Esdras 4:52

He answered me and said may be rendered simply “He answered” (Good News Bible, Contemporary English Version) or “Uriel said” (see the comments on verses 1-2).

Concerning the signs about which you ask me, I can tell you in part: The signs refers to events signaling the end of time. This sentence may be expanded by saying “I can tell you something about signs—those things that will happen before the end comes.”

But I was not sent to tell you concerning your life may be translated “But I have no authority to tell you anything about your own life” or “But God did not send me to tell you about [or give you the answer to] your own life.”

For I do not know may be expressed as “I do not know the answer to that.”

Here is an alternative model for this verse:

• Uriel said, “I can tell you something about signs—those things that will happen before the end of time comes—but I have no authority [or, God did not send me] to tell you anything about your own life. I do not know the answer to that.
