Translation commentary on 2 Esdras 4:49

And after this a cloud full of water passed before me and poured down a heavy and violent rain, and when the rainstorm had passed, drops remained in the cloud: The clause drops remained in the cloud means that drops of rain were still falling; the downpour had been replaced by a drizzle. Good News Bible provides a useful model for this verse. The following model is similar to the one in Contemporary English Version:

• Then I saw a rain cloud pass by, and rain fell from it heavily. But soon the rainstorm turned into a sprinkle of water.
