Translation commentary on 2 Esdras 10:3

But when they all had stopped consoling me means her neighbors stopped comforting her by going home. This clause may be rendered “But when everyone had gone home.”

That I might be quiet: This is a different “quietness” from that of the previous verse. Here it refers to being alone, so this clause may be translated “so that I was alone.”

I got up in the night and fled, and came to this field, as you see: The neighbors had been trying to quiet her grief, but after they left, she went into a distant field where they could not hear her as she cried. And she met Ezra, who was also in the field. This last half of the verse may be expressed as “I arose that night and ran to this field, as you can see.”
