Translation commentary on 1 Maccabees 9:72

He restored to him the captives whom he had formerly taken from the land of Judah: For the captives, see the comments on verse 70.

Then he turned and departed to his own land, and came no more into their territory may be rendered “Then he went back to his own country and never returned to Judea again.”

It is possible to combine verses 71 and 72 as follows:

• Bacchides agreed to what Jonathan demanded. He released the Jews he had captured in Judea and promised not to harm Jonathan again [or, as long as he lived]. Then he went back to his own country and never returned to Judea again.
