The battle ended as a stalemate at best. Certainly it was not a victory for Jonathan and his soldiers. Perhaps this is the reason the writer takes the opportunity to tell us in verse 47 that Jonathan almost killed Bacchides.

And about one thousand of Bacchides‘men fell that day may be translated “About 1,000 [or, one thousand] of Bacchides’ soldiers were killed [or, died] that day.”
